Investigators announced Tuesday morning that they have arrested a suspect in the shooting death of a Greenville business owner last week.

Joe Edward Gaillard has been charged with armed robbery, murder and possession of a weapon in the commission of a violent crime in connection with the death of Christopher "Kit" Maddox.

Gaillard, 46, lived in a quiet Greer neighborhood, where fellow residents said he had lived for six to eight months.

He was arrested at his home at about 2:30 a.m., investigators said.

Police said that several tips led them to identify and locate Gaillard.

Neighbors said they were shocked by the arrest.

"Unbelievable, somebody that lives three doors from you," said neighbor Gus Henry.

Henry said Gaillard was pleasant around the neighborhood.

"Never suspected, not only anything of this nature, but just anything peculiar," said Henry.

Gaillard once worked as a contractor.

WYFF News 4 interviewed him in 2002 when he helped repair a couple's home after the couple had construction problems.

Gaillard also worked as a magician. He belonged to a local magic club called "Ring 63."

Rhett Bryson, a member of the club, said Gaillard was recently elected its president.

Bryson said he was also surprised by the arrest.

"My association with him was through the performance on magic, study of magic, sharing the love of magic. And he was very giving and sharing. He was willing to help out any time he could," Bryson said.

Bryson also said he knew the man police say Gaillard shot to death.

Kit Maddox often loaned furniture from his store to Furman's theatre department, where Bryson is a professor.

Bryson said he taught Maddox's brother at Furman.

"I'm very sad for them and what they have to go through," Bryson said.

Bryson said he knows no connection between the victim and the suspect.

Police said that they believe the motive for the shooting was robbery, but the investigation is continuing. Investigators said they are still looking for the weapon used to kill Maddox.

"It's open and active,” Greenville Police Chief Willie Johnson said. “There are people on the street right now working because there are still some loose ends that we've got to tie up."

At this time, investigators are not saying what, if anything, was taken from the store.

Maddox, 53, was shot multiple times in the head and chest, investigators said.

Police said that they believe the suspect used Maddox's keys to lock the store and then drove Maddox’s pickup truck across the street, where it was found shortly after Maddox’s body was discovered.

Investigators said that they have not yet ruled out that other people participated in the crime.

Maddox's family members said that they do not know the suspect.

Johnson said that his investigators are still trying to figure out what would have caused the suspect to "snap."

"This case is probably going to be a little bit complicated when we prosecute this person in court," Johnson said. "A number of pieces of the puzzle have brought us to the point early this morning to arrest this man."

In the only other incident on Gaillard's record, he was charged with assault after a road-rage incident in 2002, Greer Police Lt. Chris Varner told WYFF News 4.

Varner said that the incident involved Gaillard becoming upset with a car that passed him on a roadway and chasing the other driver and choking and pushing him when he stopped.

    The charges were later dismissed.

    Memorial Service Held

A memorial service was held Monday morning for Maddox, who was killed on Thursday at the Bedding and World Antiques store on Wade Hampton Boulevard.

Members of Maddox’s family met Sunday outside the family-owned business.

"We're overwhelmed with the compassion, sorrow and love from friends, customers and the community. The outpouring of concern and sympathy is beyond expression and we fell this is due to the manner in which he conducted his business and personal affairs," Mark McCoy said.

Maddox's memorial service was held at Northside United Methodist Church.
