ANDERSON, S.C. -- Anderson's Free Clinic is turning away new patients, saying the bad economy and a lack of doctors willing to volunteer their time has caused the pinch. The clinic's director said that patients are being turned away for only the second time in the clinic's 24 year history."It's a horrible position to be in," executive director Maureen Sartini told WYFF News 4's Kisha Foster. "All these people need care and that's why we're here – to provide that care. It's just we have limited resources."
Those resources have become so limited that hundreds of current patients haven't been able to get appointments for check-ups at the Anderson and Honea Path clinics. Some of those patients suffer from chronic health problems like diabetes, she said. There just aren't enough doctors and hours in the day to see those in need, Sartini said."We have to get a handle on the patients we already have before we can start accepting new patients," she said.Sartini said that the clinic is still able to accept new dental and pharmacy patients, but not general practice patients."We are asking physicians that are coming if they can come a little more than they have been," Sartini said. "I hope in a couple of months we can get back on track and accept new patients."Dr. Ron Sconyers, a dentist who volunteers at the clinic, said he encourages all local physicians to volunteer their time and talents to help patients in need."I feel as a member of this community it's my responsibility to give back," Sconyers said.Physicians willing to help can contact the clinic at -864-226-1294
