Sheriff Forgets He Shoplifted; Charges Dropped

SENECA, S.C. -- The charges have been dropped against an Upstate sheriff accused of shoplifting because a stroke kept him from remembering anything he had done, police said.Seneca Police Chief Stanley Sheriff had been accused of trying to leave a Wal-Mart in Toccoa, Ga., on April 2 with some camera equipment he hadn't paid for.Toccoa police said Sheriff was charged with misdemeanor shoplifting.
Sheriff appeared in court Thursday and explained that he had no memory of going to Toccoa or being in the Wal-Mart.The charges against Sheriff were dropped.He has been on medical leave since April 2.
