An 85-year-old man drowned in Lake Keowee on Sunday when his pontoon boat drifted away, according to his son.

Deputy Coroner Greg Long said Harry Geist's death appears to be an accidental drowning.

Geist, who was from Seneca, and his son were boating when they decided to go for a swim. Geist's son said when the pontoon boat started to drift away, his father panicked and went under a few times before he disappeared under the water.

After several minutes, Geist's son found his father and swam him about 70 yards to shore.

Emergency medical workers were called to the scene, but they were unable to resuscitate Geist.

The S.C. Department of Natural Resources is investigating the apparent drowning.
