Man Killed In Freak Accident At Atlanta Airport

POSTED: 10:25 am EST November 19, 2008

A 56-year-old man was killed at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport when an awning hit him in the head, police said.

The awning fell after it was hit by a bus, police said.

Police spokesman Eric Schwartz said the bus for an off-site parking lot was pulling into the bus loading area of the terminal about 9 p.m. Sunday when it "somehow went forward and jumped the curb."

Schwartz said the bus hit a support for an awning that came down and struck Jerome Evans, of Marietta, Ga.

Evans was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he later died.

Schwarz said Tuesday that the incident is still under investigation. No charges have been filed against the shuttle driver.
