Carol Goldsmith
You could say Carol grew up in a television station. Her dad was a television advertising salesman in Michigan, and she often went to work with him. She always gravitated to the newsroom, where scanners squawked, producers yelled and the clatter of the teletype added a sense of urgency to everything, even the farm report. It all seemed like the height of excitement! Her first TV job came at age seven, when she was asked to read "The Night Before Christmas" on a live, local holiday special. All of that, plus her mother's advice to "get a job where you can get paid for being nosy, because you're the nosiest little girl I've ever met, Carol Jeanne!" lead to her early career choice of TV journalism.Carol is a native of Michigan's Upper Peninsula, and got her degree in Mass Communications from Northern Michigan University at Marquette. She also spent part of her senior year at Richmond College in England, studying British Mass Media.
Carol worked as an anchor/reporter in Marquette, Michigan and Rochester, New York. A brush with frostbite in Rochester made her realize living in a warmer climate might suit her better after all, and she happily accepted an anchor job at WYFF New 4 in 1985.After specializing in crime and business reporting, she found her niche in health and medical reporting. Carol has won a number of awards, including several Emmys, three National Headliner Awards, and the Champion-Tuck Economics Prize for Business Reporting for a series she did on the textile industry in Taiwan and Hong Kong.In 2007, the South Carolina Broadcaster's Association awarded her one of it's highest honors, the Masters Award. It "acknowledges lifetime achievements of on-air broadcasters who have made significant contributions to broadcasting in South Carolina and who personify high broadcast industry standards within their communities."Carol shares the news desk with her co-anchor Michael Cogdill each weeknight at 6 and 11. She continues to report on health and medical issues through her popular feature "4 Your Health."Carol and her husband, award-winning artist Scott Goldsmith have two teenage children. At home, you'll find her in the kitchen cooking, especially Italian and Scandinavian dishes. She's working on a Master's degree in nutrition and health education, so Carol's also worrying about calories and nutrient counts while she's cooking.Carol is a voracious reader. Her favorite author is Jane Austen. She loves all kinds of music, especially baroque and classical, rock, bluegrass and world. She collects Norwegian rosemaling, hikes, swims and writes poetry.Send e-mail to Carol Goldsmith
